### Jamia Millia Islamia – Overview Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a prominent public central university located in New Delhi, known for its long-standing contribution to higher education, research and social development in India. The institution was founded in 1920 at Aligarh during the period of India’s freedom movement. It was later shifted to Delhi and gradually developed into the multidisciplinary university that exists today. In 1988, JMI received the status of a Central University through an Act of Parliament. The history of Jamia is closely connected with the efforts of several educationists and national leaders who wanted to create an institution based on education, national development and social responsibility. Over the years, the university expanded its academic activities and introduced a wide range of subjects. Today, its academic structure includes areas such as Engineering and Technology, Management Studies, Humanities and Languages, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Law, Education, Architecture, Fine Arts, Life Sciences, Dentistry and other specialised fields. JMI also has numerous specialised departments and centres that support teaching, professional education and research. Students can pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and certificate-level programmes across different disciplines. The university also focuses on research and encourages students and faculty to work on contemporary academic and social issues. One of the notable aspects of JMI is its emphasis on inclusive education and the development of students from different backgrounds. The university aims to combine academic learning with values such as equity, fellowship, justice and social responsibility. It also provides facilities and initiatives related to student support, scholarships, hostels, sports, international education and research. JMI has continued to evolve with changing educational needs while maintaining its historical identity. Its journey from a small institution established in 1920 to a recognised Central University reflects its significant place in India's higher-education landscape. The university was awarded an **A++ grade by NAAC in its second assessment cycle in 2021**, further highlighting its institutional accreditation status.
