All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati is a premier medical education and healthcare institution established by the Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). It is an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and was established in May 2017. The foundation stone of the institute was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26, 2017, with the objective of strengthening access to high-quality tertiary healthcare and advanced medical education in the northeastern region of India. AIIMS Guwahati began its first academic session on January 12, 2021, with 50 MBBS students and 21 faculty members across four departments. Initially, academic activities were conducted from a temporary campus at Narakasur Hill-Top in Guwahati. With the expansion of academic and clinical departments, the institute gradually developed into a comprehensive medical education and healthcare centre. The institute's present campus is situated at Changsari in Kamrup (Rural) district of Assam and covers approximately 189.2 acres. The campus includes dedicated academic, hospital, hostel and residential facilities. AIIMS Guwahati is planned to provide undergraduate and postgraduate medical education along with advanced clinical services through various specialty and super-specialty departments. The medical college has an annual intake capacity of 125 MBBS students, while the nursing college has an annual intake of 75 students. The associated hospital is designed to provide OPD, emergency and inpatient healthcare services, with a planned capacity of 750 beds. Its clinical departments cover a broad range of specialties, including General Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Trauma and Emergency, and several other disciplines. AIIMS Guwahati was formally inaugurated on April 14, 2023. With its focus on medical education, patient care and research, the institute aims to contribute to the development of skilled healthcare professionals and improve access to advanced healthcare services in Assam and the wider northeastern region.
