### Aligarh Muslim University – History Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has a long and influential history in Indian higher education. Its roots can be traced to the educational initiatives of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who believed that modern education, scientific thinking and access to contemporary knowledge were essential for social development. The early foundation of the Aligarh movement was laid through educational and intellectual activities started by Sir Syed in the 19th century. In 1864, he established the Scientific Society at Aligarh, which worked towards making modern knowledge accessible to Indian society through translations and educational discussions. His efforts eventually led to the establishment of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College at Aligarh in 1877. The institution was inspired partly by the academic model of Oxford and Cambridge, while also retaining connections with the cultural and educational traditions of India. Over the following decades, MAO College expanded its academic activities and became an important centre of modern education. The institution also became closely associated with the wider Aligarh Movement, which encouraged educational development and intellectual awareness. As the demand for a university-level institution grew, efforts were made to broaden the college's academic structure and facilities. A major milestone came in 1920, when the institution was transformed into **Aligarh Muslim University** through legislation. This marked the beginning of AMU as a university with a wider academic role. Since then, AMU has developed into a multidisciplinary university offering programmes across humanities, sciences, social sciences, engineering, medicine, law and other professional fields. The university's residential character, research activities and diverse academic departments have contributed to its continuing role in Indian higher education. Today, AMU remains closely connected with the educational vision associated with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan while serving students from different parts of India and abroad. Its history reflects the evolution of an educational movement into a major institution of higher learning with a distinctive academic and cultural legacy.
