Government Medical College Anantnag Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag is a government medical institution located at Dialgam in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. Established as part of the initiative to strengthen medical education and healthcare facilities in the region, the college has developed into an important centre for medical learning and patient care in South Kashmir. The institution primarily caters to people from Anantnag and surrounding areas, including Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and parts of the Pir Panjal region. The college began its academic journey with the MBBS programme in the 2019–20 session after receiving permission to admit its first batch of students. The MBBS programme follows the competency-based medical education framework, combining classroom teaching with practical laboratory work and clinical exposure. Admission to the undergraduate programme is through NEET-UG, as per the applicable state and All India admission process. The college's current intake has also expanded, with 150 MBBS seats available per batch from 2025 onwards. GMC Anantnag is supported by associated healthcare facilities, including MMABM District Hospital and the Maternity and Child Care Hospital. These hospitals provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in clinical training across different medical departments. Rural and urban health training centres at Sagam and Brakpora further add community-based learning to the academic experience. Over the years, the institution has expanded beyond undergraduate education. It now offers several MD/MS programmes along with DNB and DrNB opportunities in selected specialties. The campus includes academic facilities, laboratories, a central library, computer facilities, skills training areas and separate hostel accommodation for students. GMC Anantnag has also contributed to healthcare services during challenging periods, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its hospitals supported testing, treatment and public-health activities during the crisis. With continued growth in medical education, clinical services and infrastructure, the college is becoming an important destination for students looking for affordable government medical education in Jammu and Kashmir.
