History of Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Bhopal is one of the well-known government medical institutions in Madhya Pradesh, with a history that goes back to the early years after Independence. The college was formally inaugurated on **13 August 1955 by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri**. It began its academic journey with just **50 students** and two basic departments—Anatomy and Physiology. At the beginning, the college operated from the building of the S.V. Polytechnic College before developing its own campus. The foundation stone for the college's permanent building was laid on **15 September 1956 by Shri Govind Ballabh Pant**, the then Union Home Minister. Construction continued for several years, and the completed building was finally inaugurated by **Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 13 March 1963**. The campus was developed around the historic Fatehgarh Fort area near the Upper Lake, giving the institution a distinctive connection with Bhopal's history and architecture. The development of Gandhi Medical College has always been closely linked with its associated hospitals. **Hamidia Hospital** and **Sultania Zanana Hospital** became important clinical training centres for students. Hamidia Hospital, which was earlier known as the Prince of Wales Hospital, developed into a major multispeciality teaching hospital, while Sultania Hospital became associated with women's healthcare and obstetrics and gynaecology services. Over the decades, GMC Bhopal expanded beyond its initial two departments and developed a wider range of medical specialties, postgraduate programmes and advanced clinical facilities. The institution also reached important milestones such as its Silver Jubilee in 1980, Golden Jubilee in 2005 and Diamond Jubilee in 2015. Another significant step came in **1997, when the college received autonomous status**, marking an important phase in its administrative development. Today, Gandhi Medical College continues to function as an important centre for medical education, clinical training and patient care in Bhopal. Its long journey from a small college with 50 students to a large medical institution reflects the gradual growth of medical education and healthcare services in Madhya Pradesh.
