Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College Chamba Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College Chamba is a government medical institution located in the historic town of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. The college was established in 2016 through the upgradation of the Regional Hospital, District Chamba, as part of the government’s initiative to strengthen medical education and healthcare facilities in underserved regions. The first batch of the college admitted 100 MBBS students. The establishment of the medical college was aimed at addressing the shortage of doctors and trained healthcare professionals in the region while also increasing access to medical education for students, including those from economically weaker backgrounds. The institution makes use of the existing healthcare infrastructure of the district, helping create a connection between medical education, clinical training and patient care. Initially, the college was affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University. It is now affiliated with Atal Medical & Research University, Mandi. The institution provides an academic environment where students can pursue medical education while gaining practical exposure through its associated healthcare facilities. One of the distinctive aspects of Government Medical College Chamba is its location. The college operates from the historic Akhand Chandi Palace in the heart of Chamba town. The palace, associated with Raja Umed Singh and dating back to the 18th century, adds a unique cultural and architectural character to the institution. Chamba itself is situated along the Ravi River and is known for its scenic surroundings, temples and rich cultural heritage. The college has played an important role in improving access to medical education and healthcare services in the Chamba region. Its presence allows local students to pursue medical studies closer to home while contributing to the availability of healthcare professionals in the area. With its focus on education, clinical exposure and community healthcare, the institution continues to serve as an important centre for medical learning and healthcare development in Himachal Pradesh.
