Government Medical College, Nagpur Government Medical College (GMC), Nagpur is one of Maharashtra’s established government medical institutions, with a long history connected to the development of medical education in the Vidarbha region. The roots of medical education in Nagpur can be traced back to Mayo Hospital, which was established in 1862 as the City Hospital. A medical school was later started there in 1914, creating an early foundation for formal medical training in the city. The demand for an independent medical college grew as students from the region had limited opportunities to pursue higher medical education locally. Following several efforts and recommendations, the Government of the Central Provinces and Berar moved forward with the establishment of a medical college. The first batch of students was admitted in 1947, marking an important stage in the history of medical education in Nagpur. Over the years, GMC Nagpur developed from its early temporary facilities into a large medical education and healthcare campus. The present college building was inaugurated in 1953, and the institution has continued to expand its academic departments, hospital services and postgraduate education. The campus covers a substantial area and has historically been associated with clinical teaching and practical medical training. Today, Government Medical College, Nagpur offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education along with several allied healthcare programmes. Its academic structure includes MBBS and postgraduate courses across multiple medical disciplines, supported by departments such as Anatomy, Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Radiology, Psychiatry and Community Medicine. The institution also provides courses in areas including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and other allied health fields. The college has a central library, hostel facilities and a broad teaching faculty. Its long-standing clinical exposure and connection with hospital-based training make it an important part of medical education in the region. Alumni and graduates of the institution have gone on to work in clinical practice, healthcare administration, research and other areas of medical science in India and abroad.
