History of SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCB Medical College & Hospital), located in Cuttack, Odisha, has a long history connected with the development of medical education and healthcare in the state. The institution has its roots in a small medical facility that was originally established to provide basic healthcare assistance to pilgrims travelling towards Puri, particularly during the famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. With the growth of Cuttack and increasing healthcare requirements, the facility gradually developed into a hospital. A major step in its educational journey came in 1875, when the Orissa Medical School was established. The school initially trained students as Licentiate Medical Practitioners and was affiliated with the Bihar and Orissa Medical Examination Board. The institution entered a new phase in 1944 when the Orissa Medical School was upgraded into a medical college. The newly established Orissa Medical College began its MBBS programme with an initial intake of 22 students. It was affiliated with Utkal University, and the first batch appeared for the final MBBS examination in 1948. In 1951, the college was renamed Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College in recognition of the contributions made by Maharaja Srirama Chandra Bhanja Deo of Mayurbhanj. The college subsequently expanded its academic activities, with postgraduate medical programmes being introduced in 1960. Later, super-speciality training in areas such as Cardiology and Neurosurgery was also introduced. Over the decades, SCB Medical College & Hospital has grown from a small healthcare facility into a major centre for medical education, specialist treatment and advanced healthcare services. Today, it continues to play an important role in serving patients from Odisha as well as neighbouring regions while contributing to the training of medical and healthcare professionals.
