### History of CHRIST (Deemed to be University) CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has a long-standing history rooted in the educational vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a prominent educationist and social reformer from South India. His emphasis on education, social responsibility and the development of individuals continues to influence the institution’s approach to learning. The university is administered by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), a congregation founded by St. Chavara in 1831. The institution began its academic journey as **Christ College in 1969**. In its early years, it focused on undergraduate education and gradually expanded its academic offerings. Courses such as BA, BSc and BCom were introduced in the 1970s, followed by several new programmes and academic initiatives over the following decades. The institution also adopted co-education and expanded its infrastructure and student activities. A significant phase of development came during the 1990s, when CHRIST introduced programmes in areas such as management, computer applications, journalism, psychology and other disciplines. Its MBA and MCA programmes were launched in 1994, reflecting its growing focus on professional education. The institution received **autonomous status from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2004** and was recognised as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006. In 2008, it was granted the status of a **Deemed to be University** under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Over time, CHRIST expanded beyond its original campus and established a presence in different regions, including the **Delhi NCR Campus at Ghaziabad**, which was inaugurated in 2014. Today, the university offers programmes across disciplines including management, commerce, humanities, sciences, law, engineering, architecture and social sciences. Its academic environment also places importance on research, extracurricular activities, cultural engagement and holistic student development. With its evolution from a college founded in 1969 to a multidisciplinary university, CHRIST has developed a diverse academic community and continues to expand its educational and research initiatives.
