Government Medical College Jammu – About the College Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu is one of the established government medical institutions in Jammu and Kashmir and has played an important role in medical education and healthcare in the region. Located in Bakshi Nagar, Jammu, the college has developed over several decades into a major centre for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as well as patient care. The institution traces its beginnings to the early 1970s, with the college making its initial start in 1971 and gradually developing its academic and clinical infrastructure. The development of GMC Jammu was closely connected with the expansion of medical services in the region. In August 1972, Dr. N. S. Pathania became the first Principal of the institution. During its early years, SMGS Hospital was brought under the college, providing an important clinical base for teaching and practical training. The first batch of students subsequently shifted to the developing GMC Jammu campus as academic and hostel facilities were established. Today, the college combines classroom-based medical education with extensive clinical exposure. Its associated healthcare network includes hospitals and specialised centres covering areas such as general medicine, surgery, chest diseases, psychiatry, maternity care, orthopaedics, super-speciality services and cancer care. This broad hospital network gives students opportunities to understand different medical conditions and observe patient management in real clinical settings. GMC Jammu offers medical education across different levels, including the MBBS programme along with postgraduate and other healthcare-related training programmes. Over the years, the institution has also expanded its diagnostic, therapeutic and academic facilities to support modern medical education and healthcare delivery. Its alumni and postgraduate doctors have gone on to contribute to healthcare services in India and abroad.
