### Department of Management Sciences, IIT Kanpur The Department of Management Sciences (DoMS) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has a strong academic background combining management education with analytical and technical thinking. The department began in 1974 as an interdisciplinary programme and later became a full-fledged department in 1988. Over the years, it has developed into an important centre for management and industrial engineering education at IIT Kanpur. DoMS brings together teaching, research and practical learning across areas such as operations and supply management, finance, marketing, economics, analytics, manufacturing systems, information technology, innovation and decision modelling. The faculty includes researchers with academic experience from reputed institutions in India and abroad. Along with classroom teaching, faculty members are involved in consultancy, management development activities and projects connected with industry and the public sector. The department currently offers Ph.D., M.Tech. and MBA programmes. Its Ph.D. programme focuses strongly on management research and attracts students from different academic backgrounds. The M.Tech. programme combines industrial engineering with management sciences and includes coursework, practical industry exposure and a dissertation. The MBA programme, introduced in 2001, was designed with the idea of developing managers who can understand both business and technology. Students study core management subjects before moving towards electives and areas of interest. The MBA curriculum also includes practical projects, case-based learning and a compulsory summer internship. Students can explore areas such as Operations, Systems, Marketing and Finance, along with sector-focused learning related to manufacturing and services. Research is an important part of DoMS, with faculty working across operations research, strategic management, entrepreneurship, technology management, consumer behaviour, quality management, infrastructure finance and other related fields. The department also encourages collaboration with academic institutions and industry. With dedicated classrooms, seminar spaces, computer facilities, a library and computational research support, DoMS provides an environment where students can develop analytical, managerial and problem-solving skills. Its overall approach reflects IIT Kanpur’s emphasis on strong academics, research and practical application.
