History of Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH), located in Koraput, Odisha, is a government medical institution that has an important place in the development of healthcare and medical education in the southern part of the state. The institution is particularly significant for the KBK region, where access to advanced medical facilities and professional healthcare education has historically been an important need. The roots of the institution can be traced back to 1908, when a dispensary was established in the area. Over the years, the healthcare facility developed along with the changing medical requirements of the region. This long association with public healthcare eventually provided a foundation for the establishment of a full-fledged medical college and teaching hospital. A major milestone came in 2017, when Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College was formally inaugurated on 4 September 2017 by the then Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik. It became the fourth government medical college in Odisha and the first medical college to be established in the KBK area. The establishment of the college marked an important step toward strengthening medical education and healthcare services in the region. Since its establishment, SLNMCH has grown into an institution combining undergraduate medical education with clinical training and patient care. The college currently conducts MBBS education and has various clinical and academic departments supported by teaching faculty and resident doctors. Its academic activities include examinations, medical education initiatives, research-related work and clinical exposure for students. The institution continues to serve both as a centre for medical learning and as a healthcare facility for people from Koraput and surrounding areas. With its historical roots dating back more than a century and its modern medical-college status established in 2017, SLNMCH represents the gradual expansion of organized healthcare and medical education in Odisha's KBK region.
