Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital, Assam Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital (LMCH), located at Chowkham, Saboti, North Lakhimpur, Assam, is a government medical institution established to strengthen medical education and healthcare services in the northern region of the state. The college is the **eighth medical college of Assam** and was established under the Government of India’s Central Sector Scheme for establishing new medical colleges attached to existing district or referral hospitals. The project received approval in 2020, and the medical college began its academic journey in 2021. It is affiliated with **Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences**, Assam. The institution was developed with the objective of addressing the growing need for qualified healthcare professionals and improving access to quality medical care in northern Assam. Its strategic location enables it to serve not only Lakhimpur district but also neighbouring areas such as Majuli, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Gohpur, Dhakuakhana, Bihpuria and Narayanpur, along with nearby regions of Arunachal Pradesh. Before the establishment of LMCH, healthcare services in the district were primarily provided by North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital, which had been serving the area since 1987. The civil hospital was subsequently amalgamated with Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital in January 2021. Lakhimpur Medical College offers the **Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)** programme and has an annual intake of **100 MBBS students** according to its NMC proforma. The attached hospital has a capacity of **500 beds**, including dedicated emergency beds, providing students with opportunities for clinical exposure and practical learning. The institution aims to integrate medical education, patient care and research while developing competent, ethical and compassionate healthcare professionals. With its expanding academic infrastructure, clinical facilities and dedicated faculty and staff, LMCH plays an important role in improving healthcare delivery and medical education across northern Assam.
