### CHRIST (Deemed to be University) – CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has developed over the years from a small college into a multidisciplinary institution with a strong presence in Indian higher education. Its foundation is connected with the educational vision of **St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara**, a nineteenth-century educator and social reformer who founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) in 1831. The congregation continues to play an important role in the administration of the university. The institution began its academic journey as **Christ College in 1969**. During its early years, it focused on building a strong academic environment and gradually expanded its programmes. Courses such as BA, BSc and BCom were introduced in the 1970s, followed by several new programmes and facilities in the following decades. The institution also introduced courses in areas including management, computer science, law and science, reflecting its effort to respond to changing educational and professional requirements. A major stage in its development came in **2004**, when the University Grants Commission granted autonomy to Christ College. It was also recognised as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006. On **22 July 2008**, the institution received the status of a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, becoming CHRIST (Deemed to be University). The university's expansion continued with the development of campuses beyond Bengaluru. The **Lavasa campus in Pune, Maharashtra, was inaugurated in 2014**, adding another location to its growing academic network. Today, CHRIST offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across fields such as management, commerce, humanities, sciences, law, engineering, architecture and education. The institution has also developed a strong research and extracurricular culture, with students participating in sports, music, literary activities and various academic initiatives. Its diverse student community includes learners from different parts of India as well as international students, giving the university a broad and multicultural academic environment.
