### Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee – History The Department of Management Studies (DoMS) at IIT Roorkee is part of an institution with a long-standing legacy in higher education. IIT Roorkee traces its roots back to 1847, when it was established as an engineering institution. Over the years, the institute developed into an important centre for technical education and was granted university status in 1949. In 2001, it became part of the Indian Institutes of Technology system and was officially known as the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The Department of Management Studies was established in 1998, during the period when the former University of Roorkee recognised the growing need for professionally trained managers. Changes in the Indian economy, increasing competition and the expansion of business and service industries created a demand for professionals who could combine analytical thinking with management knowledge. With this objective, the department began its academic journey with a two-year full-time MBA programme. Since its beginning, DoMS has gradually developed its academic resources and infrastructure to support management education. The department has dedicated classrooms, computer facilities, library resources, seminar and meeting spaces, and other learning facilities. Being located within the IIT Roorkee campus also gives students access to the wider academic environment and resources of the institute. An important feature of the MBA programme is its dual-specialisation approach. Students can build their academic focus by selecting two areas from Finance, Marketing, Operations, Information Systems and Human Resource Management. This structure allows learners to develop knowledge across different business functions rather than limiting themselves to a single management area. Over the years, DoMS IIT Roorkee has expanded beyond its original MBA offering and now also provides programmes such as Executive MBA and PhD in Management. The department continues to combine management education with the analytical and multidisciplinary environment associated with IIT Roorkee.
