Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, is one of the prominent government medical institutions in Himachal Pradesh and has played an important role in the development of medical education and healthcare services in the state. The institution was originally established as Himachal Pradesh Medical College in **1966** and began functioning from the old Snowdon Hospital building in Shimla. Its first batch consisted of 50 students. Over the years, the college has expanded significantly in terms of academic programmes, student intake, clinical facilities and specialised healthcare services. The institution was renamed **Indira Gandhi Medical College in 1984**, giving it the identity by which it is widely known today. Its MBBS intake was initially increased to 65 seats in 1978 and later expanded to 100 seats. Postgraduate medical education was introduced in 1981, beginning with several disciplines and subsequently expanding into a wider range of specialties. The college currently provides opportunities for undergraduate as well as postgraduate medical education, including MBBS and MD/MS programmes. IGMC is closely associated with major healthcare institutions in Shimla, allowing students to gain practical experience through clinical training. The institution has also developed advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities over time. Its healthcare infrastructure includes specialised services such as radiotherapy, oncology, cardiac care and advanced diagnostic facilities. The college has been recognised as a **Regional Cancer Centre**, strengthening its role in providing specialised cancer treatment to patients from Himachal Pradesh and surrounding areas.
