Silchar Medical College & Hospital Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), located in Ghungoor, Silchar, Assam, is one of the prominent government medical institutions in Northeast India. Established on **15 August 1968**, the college was founded with the objective of strengthening medical education and healthcare services in the southern part of Assam. Today, it serves as a major referral and tertiary healthcare centre for the entire Barak Valley and also caters to patients from neighbouring regions of Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya. The history of Silchar Medical College can be traced to the Government of Assam's efforts in the late 1950s to establish additional medical colleges in the state. Initially, Silchar Medical College functioned as part of a twin-college arrangement along with Gauhati Medical College. Pre-clinical classes began in 1960, while the permanent Silchar campus at Ghungoor was inaugurated in 1968. The institution's teaching hospital was developed progressively, with the Civil Hospital, Silchar, being taken over as its teaching hospital in 1971 and the main hospital complex being commissioned during 1977–78. The institution offers medical education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has expanded its academic programmes considerably over the years. Postgraduate education was introduced in 1985 in several clinical specialties, followed by the addition of further disciplines. According to the Government of Assam, the college currently has **125 MBBS seats** and offers postgraduate programmes across multiple specialties. It also supports nursing, pharmacy and paramedical education through associated institutes. SMCH provides a wide range of clinical services through departments such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Paediatrics, Cardiology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Neurosurgery and Pathology. Its hospital infrastructure includes outpatient services, wards, operation theatres, diagnostic facilities, a blood bank and specialised services such as a cath lab. With its combination of medical education, specialist healthcare and research, Silchar Medical College & Hospital continues to play an important role in developing healthcare professionals and providing advanced medical services to communities across southern Assam and neighbouring states.
