Tezpur Medical College & Hospital, Assam Tezpur Medical College & Hospital (TMCH) is a prominent government medical institution located at Bihaguri in Sonitpur district, Assam. Established in 2013, it holds the distinction of being the first medical college situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River. The foundation stone of the institution was laid on 21 October 2008 in the presence of then President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, and the then Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi. The college was subsequently dedicated to the people of Assam on 30 January 2014. The institution was established with the objective of strengthening medical education and improving access to quality healthcare services in North Assam. Tezpur Medical College is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati, and provides opportunities for undergraduate, postgraduate, nursing, paramedical and allied health sciences education. The college currently has an annual intake of 125 MBBS students, along with postgraduate programmes offering 60 seats across various clinical and non-clinical disciplines. TMCH is supported by a teaching hospital that provides comprehensive medical services to patients from Sonitpur and neighbouring districts, including Udalguri, Darrang and Biswanath, as well as parts of Arunachal Pradesh. The hospital has a substantial bed capacity, intensive care facilities, emergency and trauma services, and specialised clinical services. Its continuous patient flow also provides medical students with valuable practical exposure and opportunities to develop clinical skills. The college focuses on creating an environment that combines academic excellence, ethical medical practice, research and compassionate patient care. Its infrastructure includes modern lecture halls, laboratories, a digital library, simulation facilities and student hostels. The institution also promotes medical research through its Medical Research Unit, encouraging studies addressing regional and national healthcare challenges. With its emphasis on education, research, community healthcare and professional ethics, Tezpur Medical College & Hospital continues to play an important role in developing skilled healthcare professionals and strengthening tertiary healthcare services in Assam.
