Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University, is a well-known centre for medical education, healthcare and research located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is a constituent institute of Banaras Hindu University and has developed into a large medical education and healthcare complex over the years. The roots of medical education at BHU go back to the early development of Ayurveda. The College of Medical Sciences was established in 1960, while the Institute of Medical Sciences took its present form in the early 1970s. Since then, IMS has expanded its academic structure to include modern medicine, Ayurveda, dental sciences and nursing. For students interested in medical education, the institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced medical programmes. Its academic offerings include MBBS along with postgraduate MD/MS programmes and super-speciality DM and M.Ch. courses. BHU also provides programmes in areas such as BDS, BAMS and nursing through its medical institute and associated faculties. One of the major strengths of IMS is its connection with large teaching hospitals. Sir Sunderlal Hospital and the associated Trauma Centre provide students with opportunities for clinical exposure while also serving patients from Varanasi and surrounding regions. The institute has continued to add specialised facilities, including super-speciality services and newer clinical centres, supporting both advanced treatment and medical training. Research is another important part of the institute's academic environment. With departments covering a wide range of medical and allied specialities, IMS provides opportunities for postgraduate and doctoral-level research as well as clinical learning. Overall, IMS BHU combines the academic environment of a major central university with medical education, research and hospital-based training. Its long history, broad range of programmes and extensive clinical facilities make it an important institution for students exploring medical education in India.
