History of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, was established with the vision of creating a high-quality centre for advanced medical treatment, education, training, and research in Bihar. The idea behind the institute emerged from the need to provide specialised healthcare within the state, as many patients from Bihar had to travel to major medical centres such as AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh and other institutions outside the region for treatment of serious and complex diseases. This created significant financial and logistical difficulties for patients and their families. To address this need, the Government of Bihar planned an institution modeled on the standards and structure of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The institute was formally established on 19 November 1983 and was named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The IGIMS Act, 1984 provided the institutional framework for developing the centre as an autonomous organisation focused on advanced medical services and healthcare education. From its inception, IGIMS was intended to function as an apex healthcare centre offering specialised and super-specialised medical services. Its objectives extended beyond patient care to include the training of medical specialists, postgraduate education, clinical research, community health research and improvement of healthcare services through better referral networks with medical colleges and hospitals across the state. The institute was planned as a large medical complex, with development proposed in multiple phases. Founder’s Legacy – Swami Rama Himalayan University The foundation of Swami Rama Himalayan University is closely connected with the vision and life work of H.H. Dr. Swami Rama, a spiritual teacher, philosopher, researcher and humanitarian. His approach was different from simply separating science and spirituality. He believed that both could work together to improve human life, health and well-being. Dr. Swami Rama received education in India as well as at Oxford and later worked as a medical consultant in London. His interest in understanding the relationship between the mind and body also led him towards research in areas that connected human consciousness with scientific study. His experiences across different countries eventually shaped his broader vision of combining traditional knowledge with modern scientific thinking. In 1966, he established Sadhana Mandir in Rishikesh, an institution focused on Raja Yoga, meditation and holistic health. He later founded the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy in the United States in 1971, where research was carried out on the influence of the mind on the body. His work received attention through several international scientific and reference publications during the 1970s.
