History of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, has developed into one of the important centres for advanced medical education, specialised healthcare and research in India. The foundation stone of the institute was laid on **14 December 1980** by the then President of India, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. The institute was subsequently established under an Act of the Uttar Pradesh State Legislature in 1983, with the objective of creating a centre capable of combining high-quality patient care with medical teaching, training and research. Over the years, SGPGIMS expanded its range of specialised healthcare services according to the changing needs of patients. Several important areas, including Critical Care Medicine, Hematology, Pediatric Gastroenterology and specialised pediatric surgery, became part of its academic and clinical development. Further departments were added in areas such as Plastic Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Ophthalmology, Neonatology, Maternal and Reproductive Health, and Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology. The institute has also been associated with the early development of technology-driven healthcare. Its **Telemedicine Programme began in 1999**, helping promote medical education and communication through video-conferencing facilities. In 2006, the School of Telemedicine and Biomedical Informatics was established, reflecting SGPGIMS's growing focus on technology and healthcare. Another notable initiative was the introduction of the **Hospital Revolving Fund in 1997**, designed to make medicines and consumables more accessible to admitted patients at comparatively lower costs. A similar Investigation Revolving Fund followed in 2002 for laboratory and diagnostic requirements. Academic development has remained an important part of the institute's journey. The College of Nursing was introduced with the B.Sc. Nursing programme in 2008, followed by the M.Sc. Nursing programme in 2019. SGPGIMS has also contributed to postgraduate and specialised medical training, producing professionals who have gone on to work across India and abroad. Today, the institute continues to focus on specialised patient care, education, research and innovation, building upon more than four decades of institutional development.
