Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada – History Rangaraya Medical College, located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, is one of the state’s long-established medical institutions. The foundation of the college dates back to the mid-1950s, when dedicated efforts were initiated by Dr. M. V. Krishnarao and Colonel Dr. D. S. Raju. Their vision was to establish an institution that could contribute to medical education, healthcare services, and medical research in the region. A major step towards realizing this vision was taken on 2 April 1958 during a meeting in Kakinada attended by Sri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The Maharajah of Pithapuram supported the initiative and agreed to provide an existing orphanage building on Pithapuram Road for the proposed medical college. Subsequently, the Kakinada Medical Education Society was registered on 16 April 1958 to oversee the development of the institution, with medical education, research, and service as its principal objectives. The college formally began its academic journey in 1958, with its teaching activities commencing in August and the institution being inaugurated later that year. The first batch consisted of 100 students, marking the beginning of an enduring legacy in medical education. The institution was named Rangaraya Medical College in recognition of significant contributions and support from prominent benefactors associated with the founding of the college. Over the decades, Rangaraya Medical College has expanded considerably in terms of academic programmes, clinical departments, postgraduate education, research, and healthcare services. Its teaching hospital, Government General Hospital, Kakinada, provides extensive clinical exposure and patient-care facilities to support medical training. The college is currently a government medical institution and is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences.
