Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) is an initiative of the Government of Gujarat aimed at strengthening medical education, healthcare services and the availability of trained medical professionals across the state. The organisation was developed with the broader objective of addressing the growing demand for doctors while improving access to quality healthcare in different regions of Gujarat. GMERS has played an important role in expanding the state's medical education network by establishing medical colleges at various locations. Its early medical colleges at Sola in Ahmedabad and Gotri in Vadodara began operations during the 2011–12 academic year. This was followed by institutions at Gandhinagar, Dharpur-Patan and Valsad in 2012–13. Later, GMERS expanded further with medical colleges at Himmatnagar and Junagadh. The organisation's official network now includes medical colleges across several parts of Gujarat, including Rajpipla, Navsari, Porbandar, Morbi and Godhra. One of the distinctive aspects of the GMERS model is its combination of government oversight with a relatively decentralised administrative structure. This approach is intended to make institutional management, recruitment and academic operations more responsive while continuing to maintain public accountability. GMERS institutions also focus on providing healthcare services to the community alongside medical education. For students, GMERS medical colleges provide opportunities to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate medical education while gaining practical exposure through associated hospitals and clinical services. The colleges follow the regulatory framework applicable to medical education in India, and their programmes are designed to develop competent healthcare professionals. The growth of GMERS has contributed to making medical education more accessible beyond Gujarat's major urban centres. By developing institutions in different districts, the organisation has also supported the wider distribution of healthcare infrastructure and medical knowledge. For students exploring MBBS and other medical programmes in Gujarat, GMERS colleges can therefore be an important option to consider, particularly for those looking for government-supported medical education combined with clinical exposure and community-oriented healthcare services.
