All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Darbhanga All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Darbhanga is an upcoming central government medical institution being developed in Darbhanga, Bihar. The institute is planned as the second AIIMS in the state after AIIMS Patna and is being established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of AIIMS Darbhanga on 15 September 2020 with an estimated project cost of ₹1,264 crore. The project is intended to strengthen advanced healthcare, medical education and research facilities in the Mithila region and surrounding areas. The foundation stone of AIIMS Darbhanga was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 November 2024, marking an important step toward the development of the institute. The campus is being developed over approximately 187 acres at Ekmi-Shobhan Bypass in Darbhanga. As planned, AIIMS Darbhanga will include a 750-bed super-specialty hospital along with academic and residential facilities. The proposed infrastructure includes a medical college, nursing college, AYUSH facilities, hostels, residential accommodation for doctors and staff, and a night shelter for patients and their attendants. The medical college is planned to offer 125 MBBS seats, while the nursing college is expected to have 60 seats. The institute is expected to provide tertiary and specialized healthcare services to people from Darbhanga and nearby districts such as Madhubani, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, Purnia and other parts of Bihar. Its location is also expected to benefit people from neighbouring areas of West Bengal and eastern Uttar Pradesh. AIIMS Darbhanga represents a major investment in Bihar's medical infrastructure. Once fully developed, the institute is expected to combine patient care, medical education and research under one integrated healthcare system. The project is therefore intended not only to improve access to advanced treatment but also to contribute to the development of skilled medical and healthcare professionals in the region.
