History of Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Bhopal is one of the well-known government medical institutions in Madhya Pradesh, with a history that goes back to the early years after Independence. The college was formally inaugurated on **13 August 1955 by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri**. It began its academic journey with just **50 students** and two basic departments—Anatomy and Physiology. At the beginning, the college operated from the building of the S.V. Polytechnic College before developing its own campus. The foundation stone for the college's permanent building was laid on **15 September 1956 by Shri Govind Ballabh Pant**, the then Union Home Minister. Construction continued for several years, and the completed building was finally inaugurated by **Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 13 March 1963**. The campus was developed around the historic Fatehgarh Fort area near the Upper Lake, giving the institution a distinctive connection with Bhopal's history and architecture.
