### CHRIST (Deemed to be University) – History & Background CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has developed into a well-known multidisciplinary institution with its roots in the educational vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a nineteenth-century educator and social reformer. The institution is administered by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), a congregation founded by him in 1831. His emphasis on education, social responsibility and the overall development of individuals continues to influence the university’s approach to learning. The institution began its academic journey as Christ College in 1969 in Bengaluru. In its early years, it offered pre-university education and gradually expanded into undergraduate programmes such as BA, BSc and BCom. Over the following decades, new areas of study were introduced, including computer science, management, journalism, psychology, hotel management, commerce and other disciplines. The introduction of MBA and MCA programmes in 1994 marked another important step in its academic expansion. CHRIST received autonomous status from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2004 and was recognised as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006. In 2008, the Government of India granted the institution the status of a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Its accreditation journey with NAAC began in 1998, and the university currently holds an A+ accreditation. Today, CHRIST offers programmes across areas including humanities, social sciences, sciences, commerce, management, engineering, architecture, education and law. Its academic presence extends across multiple campuses in Bengaluru, Pune-Lavasa and Delhi NCR. The university also places emphasis on research, extracurricular activities, sports, music and cultural engagement. With students from different parts of India as well as several countries, CHRIST has built a diverse academic environment. Its continued expansion into new programmes, research initiatives and emerging areas reflects its effort to adapt to changing educational needs while maintaining its focus on academic learning and holistic development.
