### University of Delhi – Overview The University of Delhi (DU) is one of India’s well-known public universities, with a long academic history and a wide network of colleges and departments. Established in **1922** through an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly, the university started with only three colleges and around 750 students. Over the decades, it has expanded into a large multidisciplinary institution serving students from different parts of India and abroad. Today, the University of Delhi has **16 faculties, more than 80 academic departments and around 80 colleges**, offering programmes across humanities, social sciences, commerce, science, technology, management, education, law and medical sciences. Its academic structure includes both undergraduate and postgraduate education along with doctoral-level research. The university website lists departments ranging from Chemistry, Physics and Statistics to Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Computer Science and Management. DU has developed a strong academic and research culture over the years. Several of its departments have received recognition as Centres of Advanced Studies, while various departments participate in research programmes supported by organisations such as the University Grants Commission. The university also maintains a substantial library network and research facilities, including the University Science Instrumentation Centre, which supports advanced academic and scientific work. Another important part of Delhi University is its extensive college network. Institutions such as Hindu College, Hans Raj College, Miranda House, Shri Ram College of Commerce, St. Stephen’s College and many others are part of the university system. This gives students opportunities to study in different academic environments while remaining connected to the larger DU framework. The university also places emphasis on student activities, scholarships, sports, NCC, NSS, international student support and career-related services. With its combination of established academic traditions, diverse courses, research opportunities and a large student community, the University of Delhi continues to be an important destination for higher education in India.
