Founder’s Legacy – Swami Rama Himalayan University The foundation of Swami Rama Himalayan University is closely connected with the vision and life work of H.H. Dr. Swami Rama, a spiritual teacher, philosopher, researcher and humanitarian. His approach was different from simply separating science and spirituality. He believed that both could work together to improve human life, health and well-being. Dr. Swami Rama received education in India as well as at Oxford and later worked as a medical consultant in London. His interest in understanding the relationship between the mind and body also led him towards research in areas that connected human consciousness with scientific study. His experiences across different countries eventually shaped his broader vision of combining traditional knowledge with modern scientific thinking. In 1966, he established Sadhana Mandir in Rishikesh, an institution focused on Raja Yoga, meditation and holistic health. He later founded the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy in the United States in 1971, where research was carried out on the influence of the mind on the body. His work received attention through several international scientific and reference publications during the 1970s. A major step in his institutional journey came in 1989 with the establishment of the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) in Dehradun. The initiative was aimed at contributing to healthcare and education while also addressing wider social and community needs. His philosophy placed importance on serving humanity, with healthcare, education, rural development and personal well-being forming important parts of this vision. The ideas introduced by Swami Rama continued to influence the development of institutions associated with the Himalayan region. Under the leadership of Dr. Vijay Dhasmana and his team, this legacy has been carried forward through educational initiatives, healthcare services, research and community-oriented activities. Today, the founder’s vision remains an important part of the identity of Swami Rama Himalayan University. The institution continues to connect professional education with healthcare, research, humanitarian values and service, reflecting the broader philosophy on which its foundation was built.
